Winter Wedding Guest Dresses
for the church, the ballroom, and the lodge.

A winter wedding is not a fall wedding with a coat. Fabric gets heavier, hems get longer, sleeves get useful, and shoes close at the toe. This guide sorts what to wear to a winter wedding by dress code, venue, and color, then opens the Epicplacess collections built for each.

Start with the invitation.

A December ceremony in a stone church and a New Year's Eve wedding in a hotel ballroom are both 'winter weddings', and they call for different dresses. Each card opens the collection built for that dress code.

The color guide

Winter wedding guest colors that photograph well.

Emerald & forest green Sapphire & navy Wine & burgundy Plum Black: fine after dark Champagne & gold Silver: NYE weddings only Deep red: December

Winter light is warm and low indoors and flat and grey outdoors, and jewel tones look rich in both. Black is fully appropriate for an evening winter wedding. Metallics belong at a New Year's Eve wedding and almost nowhere else. Skip pale pastels, which disappear against snow, and skip white, ivory, and cream for the usual reason. The coat is part of the outfit.

The Epic rule

Plan for the cold instead of pretending it is not there.

The guests who look best at a December wedding chose weight, length, and a closed toe on purpose, and picked the coat when they picked the dress. Everything else on this page follows from that.

Winter Wedding Guest Dresses FAQ

The questions before the RSVP.

What should I wear to a winter wedding as a guest?

A floor-length or midi dress in a heavier fabric (satin with weight, velvet-look, scuba knit, or heavy crepe) in a jewel tone or black, with closed-toe heels and a coat, stole, or jacket that matches the dress. Start with formal dresses and cocktail dresses.

Can I wear black to a winter wedding?

Yes. Black is fully appropriate for an evening or formal winter wedding. Add one warm element, such as gold jewelry, a wine-colored stole, or a metallic shoe, so it reads celebratory rather than somber. Avoid black at a daytime or casual winter wedding.

What colors are best for a winter wedding guest dress?

Emerald, sapphire, wine, plum, forest green, deep red, champagne, and black. Jewel tones photograph well in low winter light. Skip pale pastels, which disappear against snow and grey skies, and skip white, ivory, and cream.

What shoes should I wear to a winter wedding?

Closed-toe, always: a block heel, a heeled ankle boot, or a dressy knee boot under a midi. Open-toe sandals belong to another season, and stilettos on icy pavement are a risk. See shoes.

Can I wear a short dress to a winter wedding?

Only at an indoor evening reception, and only with tights and a long coat you are willing to keep on for the arrival photos. For most winter weddings, midi or floor-length is the better choice. See midi dresses.

What do I wear over a dress to a winter wedding?

A wool coat in black, camel, or the dress color; a faux-fur stole; or a cape. All three look intentional in photos and come off easily inside. A puffer jacket does not. See jackets and layers.

Does Epicplacess have plus size winter wedding guest dresses?

Yes. The plus and curve collection includes wrap fronts, corset bodices with stretch, ruched satin midis, and A-line maxis in jewel tones, and many dresses run S through 3X.
