What tends to disappoint is the opposite of everything above: a loose shift with no waist, and a thin unlined knit that shows every seam underneath. When in doubt, choose the dress with the most defined waist and build the rest around it.

Buy: stretch satin, scuba knit, ponte, and lined jersey. All four hold a shape, resist clinging, and survive a long night. Sequin on a stretch base and velvet-look with weight also work well for parties. Skip: very thin jersey and unlined chiffon, which show lines and lose their shape by the second hour.
